Book Review - Interstellar Cinderella

***** I give Interstellar Cinderella by Deborah Underwood (Illustrated by Meg Hunt) 5 enthusiastic stars! But I'd give it a whole galaxy-full if I could!

Now, my criteria for giving something 5 stars, is whether or not I want to read it again. Of course, with children’s books, I pretty much know I’ll be reading them again. And again and again. But, there are some books that I try to hide when it’s story time and others that I’m always hopefully shoving in my kids’s faces. This is one I’ve read a dozen times even though we’ve only had it for a short time and neither my kids nor I are tired of it.

What I Liked:
  • This is my favorite retelling of the Cinderella story (which is impressive because I grew up addicted to the movie Ever After.) It’s set in outer space and features a stargazing Cinderella whose dream is to become a mechanic. She does have a pet mouse and a “fairy godrobot.” She does hit the “Gravity-Free Ball,” but only after saving the prince’s bacon. She and the prince have a lot in common and in the end, he finds her based on her skill and her sonic socket wrench rather than a shoe. She gets that proposal everyone is expecting but her answer is one that I imagine any parent would be pleased with.
  • The illustrations are wonderful. They’re vivid and whimsical and they keep my kids’s attention.
  • It rhymes! It flows wonderfully and the lines are clever and fun to read.

What I Didn’t Like:
  • Yep. I’m just gonna leave this category empty. I adore it.

Would I Recommend and To Whom:
I would recommend this to just about any parent, especially those with daughters.

Favorite Quotes:
The prince’s spaceship jerked and hissed
and spewed a cloud of grit.
The prince hopped out. “Oh blast! What now?
     My chief mechanic quit!”
