Review - The Saddle Daddy Rode by K.M. Weiland

* * * * * I give The Saddle Daddy Rode by K.M. Weiland 5 stars! I was given a copy of this story in exchange for my honest review.

I can give an honest review, but I can’t say it is unbiased. This story touched me very deeply. As a horse person, who grew up in a rural farming/ranching community, and as someone who has lost a beloved father figure, this story hit close to home. I highly recommend that readers bring tissues.

 What I Liked:
  • K.M. Weiland is an expert at putting the reader into the scene without letting them know she’s doing it. The descriptions of the barn, tack room, and the chores Lail is doing around the ranch are spot on.
  • The tone and tempo of the story are perfect for evoking the emotions that Lail is feeling; that struggle to keep moving, the guilt over the anger one feels, and frozen moments when the sound of birdsong, or a scent of aftershave will be forever emblazoned on your memory. It was moving and magical.

What I Didn’t Like:
  • I shake my fist at the author for making me cry an obscene number of times in such a short time span. But, that only means the story was great and it not a real complaint.

Would I Recommend This and to Whom:
I would recommend this story to anyone. It is well thought-out and well-written. It will hold a particular appeal for Christian readers.

Favorite Quotes:
  • She looked at him over the top of Sundown’s neck and tried a frown that insisted on becoming a smile. She could fool the world, but never her father. He read her like he read the skies above the mountains.
  • Straight and tall and unwavering – that was how Walt McGurney had sat his saddle, no matter the horse beneath it. That was how Walt McGurney had approached all of life.
