"May"

Hello, hello! So, I had a flash fiction piece all ready for last week and I up and decided at the last minute to save it. I kinda like it and I'm considering submitting it to a competition. This left me high and dry for a blog post.

This works, because I’ve been thinking about reducing my posts to two per month. I’ve got a lot going down this summer writing wise, most importantly my WIP which is getting closer and closer to heading out to beta readers. (Keep an eye out for a post on what beta readers do and how to become one, ‘cause I’ll be asking for some soon!)

May is almost over and the lilacs (my favorite flower) have already come and gone in this area of the country. But, every May I think of this little poem I wrote in ‘07 or ’08 when handsome Sampson and I were spending an afternoon lounging in our yard.

Obviously this photo was taken in fall. The poem would've been written the following spring.

So here it is – a little seasonal poem titled: “May”

May again
the world has come around again
the lilacs are in bloom.
And every year has differed
sometimes wildly
this change as large as all the rest.
Beneath the overcast spring sky
I wonder if my life will ever be
steady or solid or sure.
I can’t escape the wondering
the worrying
even here with purple petals falling on my face.
I can’t escape the future
or the past
even with the warm and trusting eyes upon me.
Those eyes that have the luxury
of living always in the now.
Sometimes I can take that peace
into my soul
like sharing the beauty of lilacs
by breathing the perfume
into my lungs.
For a moment.

But today I wonder about tomorrow.
That human domain that’s overcast
despite the lovely lilacs in May.
