April is for Book Lovers
April is a great month for the bookish type.
National Poetry Month
National Literature Month
School Library Month
National Library Week (19th- 25th)
D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Day (12th – which is Beverly Cleary’s Birthday)
Shakespeare Day (23rd, date of William’s birth & death)
Independent Bookstore Day (25th)
That’s not even the full list, just the ones that stand out most to me.
In honor of National Poetry Month, I thought I’d share a poem I wrote about a year ago. It’s coming back to haunt me as I make decisions about my plans for balancing my writing with the rest of life for the remainder of this year. A bit more of my poetry can be found on the Portfolio page of this site.
If you enjoy poetry every day and not only in April, I highly recommend signing up for the Poem-a-Day emails from poets.org. I’ve read some amazing work right out of my inbox in the last year or so I’ve been subscribed.
Here’s that promised poem. Happy April!
Indecision is a bed of bones.
The dispersing carcasses of opportunity.
Fed them little
tried to suss out which was the best
the strongest
until they starved
and rotted
while I wished for certainty
and inspiration
that never came.
Indecision is a corpse road,
ghost and shadows
winding along it
taunting me with maybes
should’a, could’a, would’a
but it’s too late.
You could’ve made wings of these bones
but you curl up on them instead.
